I have a feeling driving one of these would be so exciting and terrifying at the same time that no other car could match it.

The way you described the car is the way EVO described it

Based on evo 's description of it, it's a bit of an acquired taste. The brakes, clutch and steering are really heavy (the latter being slow and a bit lifeless too), the gear change is very stiff, the active suspension on later models is jolty and there's tremendous turbo-lag.
However, if you can find a smooth, well-sighted road and push through the initial struggle, you'll find an "intensely physical" and highly-rewarding driving experience. Just keep it on the boost! Below 4000rpm you might as well be driving a Fiat Panda.
In the end they actually rated the F50 over the F40, which may have surprised some.
